Tuesday, June 20, 2017

Talk with your teen drivers and take extra caution out on the roads following Memorial Day holiday.

The start of Memorial Day brings with it the start of the “100 Deadliest Days” on the road for teenage drivers. According to the CDC , 2,333 teens in the United States died and another 221,313 suffered injuries from motor vehicle accidents in 2014.

With schools letting out for the summer this period marks one of the most dangerous stretch of days for teenage drivers. More and more reports come forward showing the increasing rates of teenage drivers deaths during this 100 day stretch.

AAA has conducted research and has found that a large percentage of these accidents are the result of distracted driving. There has been an upward trend of teen drivers texting and using social media.

AAA research has found that over the prior 5 years during the “100 Deadliest Days” period that “the average number of deaths from crashes involving teen drivers ages 16-19 increased by 16 percent per day compared to other days of the year”. The top three distraction among teen driver according to the AAA researchers include:

  1. Talking or attending to other passengers (15% of crashes)
  2. Talking, texting, or operating cell phones (12% of crashes)
  3. Attending to or looking at something inside the vehicle (11% of crashes)

It is important that we all stress the importance of safe driving to teenage drivers. Minimizing distractions behind the wheel can go a long way in ensuring a safer road for everyone.
