Causes of Accidents in Indiana:
Accidents can occur for a variety of reasons. This article is to outline a couple of the more common causes that our firm has seen over the years. These causes are listed in no particular order.
- Distracted Driving – With more and more technology being placed into cars and into people’s pockets, it is no surprise that drivers are becoming more and more distracted. This can be particularly true of new and younger drivers. Texting, viewing videos, or just using a phone in general are often the most common distractions that people think of. However, even adjusting your radio, trying to eat and drive, put on makeup, or just talking with passengers can also be enough for a driver to lose focus and cause an accident.
If it is suspected that another driver was distracted and caused an accident there are ways to try to uncover the distraction. Once a case is file a deposition of the driver can be taken. Additionally, discovery can be completed asking for phone records or asking particular questions of the defendant driver. Also, most cars are equipped with a computer which will tell if the car braked prior to the accident. If the car failed to brake or slow their speed at all this can be an indication of distracted driving.
- Violation of Traffic Regulations: These can be caused by distractions as listed above, or could be the result of improper driving habits or impatient driving. Some examples would include: following too closely, disregarding traffic signals, failing to yield the right of way, not staying in the designated lanes, or even unsafe speed.
- Driving under the influence: Impaired driving, whether under the influence of drugs or alcohol is the result of many accidents every year. Being under the influence of these substances can reduce reaction time and result in improper decision making. If there has been a drunk driver who caused an accident it may be wise to see where he was served. A bar or restaurant can face potential liability for over serving their patrons.
- Weather or vehicle malfunctions: Mother nature can make road conditions unsafe which can lead to accidents. Ice and heavy rain are just two examples of how weather can impact your driving. Also, improper maintenance can cause accidents. We have seen at fault drivers stating that faulty brakes were to be blamed for rear end collisions.
