Dangers of Drowsy Driving:
Anyone who has ever drove while a little sleepy knows the dangers of drowsy driving. Even a few seconds of nodding off behind the wheel can lead to consequences that last a lifetime.
Driving drowsy can be just as fatal as drunk driving and the drivers can suffer from similar impairments when driving. These include:
- Loss of focus;
- Lack of attention;
- Impaired decision making;
- Delayed reaction times; and
- Decreases in overall performance.
However, one thing much different between drunk driving and drowsy driving is the evidence to prove what caused the accident. With drunk driving there will be blood tests and breath tests which can help establish the fault of the accident. When someone falls asleep behind the wheel it is a little trickier to pin point the cause. Police investigators have been trained to look for the absent of braking, skid marks, or other evasive maneuvers which may show that the person fell asleep. The driver or other witness may also give statements to the police which would suggest or state the individual had fallen asleep.
If a driver is feeling sleepy or drowsy they should pull over until they are alert enough to continue driving. If these individuals do cause an accident due to falling asleep behind the wheel they can be held responsible for any injuries or damage they cause.
