Motorcycle Safety: Best tips to avoid an accident.

1. Wear your safety equipment.

You can't always predict or control what the other drivers on the roadways will do. However, you can control what you do and wearing your safety equipment should be one of those things. If a motorcyclist is involved in an accident there is serious risk for head trauma. Wearing a DOT-compliant helmet can drastically help cut down on the risk of a serious head injury.

Also, the proper footwear, pants, and jackets can all help avoid or lessen the risk of road rash or other injuries in the event there is an accident.

2. Be familiar with traffic laws and obey them.

Make sure you maintain a valid motorcycle endorsement and driver's license. Keep up on any changes in the traffic laws and make sure to follow them.

3. Be familiar with your personal motorcycle.

This tip sounds pretty basic, but practicing and being familiar with your motorcycle and how it responds to cornering and application of the throttle in all circumstances can help you avoid accidents. Knowing these things can help you swerve from pot holes or vehicles that are not obeying the rules of the road.

This tip also includes checking your motorcycle before you ride for any issues. Make sure all the nuts and bolts are tight and your tires are properly inflated. All of these small things could add up to a big issue traveling down a highway.

4. Avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Another common sense tip. Don't drive impaired as this drastically increases your risk of an accident. Your reaction time can become delayed, your coordination and balance can become impaired.

Even if all of the tips above are followed it does not guarantee there may not be an accident.
